 The wealthiest people in the world will say you have to have either leveraged income or residual income. But what if you can have both?

So what's the difference between leveraged and residual income, and why it's important that you should actually go for both.

Leveraged Income

This is the type of revenue that you can earn from the work that other people do. Network marketing and affiliate marketing are two perfect examples of creating leveraged income.

Here's how that works: A company produces its products and contracts a sales team to sell the products for them. Each team leader then builds a team of affiliates who also make sales.

Each sales person earns a commission not only from their own sales, but also earns an Override commission, which is a percentage of the sales the affiliates make.

The more affiliates you can build into your team, or downline, the more sales they make, the more commissions you'll earn.

After your launch is over, you can refocus your energies on your coaching clients; however, you don't ever want to fall into the 'forget it' phase, because people need reminding. Here are some additional actions you can take to promote your product(s):

· Add a graphic to your website home page with a link to your sales page.

· Create an affiliate program for others to promote your product for a commission and send out an announcement about it.

· Create a monthly social media message which includes occasional promotions of your product.

Organic sales are wonderful, and they certainly happen, but you shouldn't depend solely on the search engines to bring buyers to you.

How Creating Digital Products Can Give You Passive Income



Have you heard the statistic that millionaires have up to seven income streams? That's seven different ways that they're making money each month. Now take a look at your business; how many streams of income do you have?

If the answer is one, then it's time to open up that creative part of your brain and create more income streams. One option is passive income products.

"Passive income" is something of a misnomer. Creating products or setting up different forms of income still takes work. But the difference is that these streams of income can work for you---almost on autopilot---for years to come.

1. Increase your bottom line profits. This is the most obvious benefit, but worth mentioning, because who doesn't want to earn more profits? That means you can take off a little earlier or take an entire day off for fun, because your "passive" products are still earning money.

3. Increase your credibility by helping more people. Think of passive income as a way to share your expertise with an ever-expanding audience. Imagine a snowball at the top of a mountain representing you with your inner circle of coaching clients. As the snowball travels downhill, it gathers more and more snow until it reaches mammoth size. The same is true of you. As you reach out to more and more people, and providing guidance through your books, webinars, or courses, increased exposure and word of mouth leverage your knowledge and showcase your expertise to more and more people. This all can lead to increased sales and an army of people who rave about your work. So (at least in this case) the snowball effect is a very good thing!

Now that I've hopefully sold you on the benefits of having passive income streams, it's time to plan out what those streams should be for your business. Passive income includes affiliate marketing, membership subscriptions, or writing a book. But by far the most popular and engaging is creating courses or digital products based on your coaching specialty.

Digital products allow you to solve other people's problems from the comfort of your home. And your customers get answers to their particular questions almost immediately, and in a format they can use---their home computer, or smartphone.

Creating Your Product

There are many steps involved in creating a product but once you've done one, creating others will be easier. When creating a digital product, you want to be sure to make it relevant to your main topic of interest. So, if you are a health coach, you want your product to be about a health issue, not a career issue. Also, you want to further hone it down by asking your audience what they need. This is something you can determine by quick surveys or just by keeping track of their frequent questions.

Next you need to validate the product, double-checking to make sure it's the right one. Ask clients if it would be helpful and/or relevant. Put out questions about it on forums. You could even do a prelaunch with valued clients to test the product for you. I have a colleague who I give my products to in exchange for her evaluation of them.

Then you will need to write content for launching and promoting your product, and, finally, determine your pricing.

Launching Your Product

When you are launching a product, you need both a series of anticipation emails, and a series of launch emails.

1) Anticipation emails build excitement. They should be educating your audience on a topic you're passionate about (and one that's related to the course you're selling). And give them a teaser for the product.

2) Launch emails make the offer. They say that the product is ready and point to where people can buy it.

As this marketer puts it:

"With my launches I built up to anticipation over a matter of weeks, not months or years. Each time I talk about it, the likely buyers get more and more excited. Then I give a clear date for when the product will launch and be available for purchase.

"The day before launch I send out a detailed email providing every bit of information my subscribers need in order to make a purchase. This email covers the benefits of the product, pricing information, and even answers frequently asked questions (that actually haven't been asked yet).

"The one thing the email doesn't include is a link to buy the product. Instead I tell them exactly when the product will be available (8:00 AM Eastern tomorrow) and to expect another email from me at that time." - Nathan Barry, Founder, ConvertKit.com

If your launch runs for 5 days you'll need at least 5 emails. I've been on some lists where they sent out two emails a day---sometimes the same email but different subject lines. To me that's overdoing it, but it depends on your audience as to how often to email them. Keep in mind that they probably don't read all their emails. So it doesn't hurt to send out more than one.

Creating Urgency

Here are four easy ways that you can get your on-the-fence customers to purchase now:

1. Have sale or promotional pricing ending soon

2. Make the product available for a limited amount of time

3. Provide an additional bonus only available to the first x number of customers

4. Limit the quantity available for sale

Pick one or two of these strategies that will resonate with your audience. With careful planning, the urgency in your launch emails can boost sales.

In Conclusion

Working with clients one-on-one is great, but it shouldn't be your entire business model. You need to have some other sources of income that supplement your coaching program. After all, how many times have you had a month with no new clients? With another source of income, that scenario is less painful.

If people don't know you yet, they're probably not going to drop $1000 on a coaching program. But they might be willing to take a chance on you for something that costs them $50 or less---because it's low risk for them.

Create quality content
Now that we have covered the topics of identifying the target audience, setting achievable goals, choosing the right medium and promoting the right product/services let us now take a look at the type of content a business should promote on their social pages. A business should always focus on creating good quality content rather than not-good quantity content. Even if the business updates their page once in a day as long as it is relevant to their business, advocates about its core products send across a clear message it is considered as a good quality content. Antagonistically, if a business posts multiple updates which aren't even relevant to the business's products and services leads to users considering the business as fake/spam. Also, new businesses should try and refrain from promoting other businesses on their social platforms initially.

Create a content calendar
Making a small business successful on social platforms is no small task. It takes a lot of efforts for the businesses to keep up their conversion ratio. One such effort is to create a content calendar. Small businesses must anticipate important events and create a content calendar accordingly. Ideally, a content calendar must be planned a month in advance but an even weekly content calendar is highly recommended. This helps businesses to avoid any last minute hassles, strategize much more effectively and it also helps in creating curiosity amongst its loyal fans/customers.

Test and re-test
Social media is highly unpredictable. The content a business posts today, might not work for tomorrow. Hence, small businesses must always test their content before publishing it on their pages. Small business owners must always don the consumer's hat before posting about any product feature, updates, schemes or offers. A consumer's perspective is the key when testing the content that has to be uploaded.

Look for inspiration
Small businesses must always look for inspiration from a competitor who is successful in the same category. Copy pasting competitors idea or content is not the answer. Small businesses must look for the kind of content its competitors are putting up and derive their own strategies subsequently. Inspiring content/stories always make a business to strive to create their own content that is appreciated by one and all. It helps in increasing brand consideration, brand visibility thereby increasing conversions for the business.

Calculate ROI
Even a small promotional budget is not justifiable if there is no mechanism to calculate its return on investment. It is more important in case of small businesses. It is very important for a small business to keep a tab on the budgets allocated to any promotions and the subsequent ROI related to it. If a certain promotion is not doing well or the business is not getting desired results, the brand custodian can always look for other platforms to generate quality conversions.

Analyze and Re-strategize
There can be umpteen instances where a particular campaign/promotion might not work for a business. That doesn't mean that the promotion is wrong or the product/service is not good. Doing an analysis of the campaign is as important as setting the objective. This helps the business to formulate their upcoming strategies in more effective ways. Stop Doing These 3 Wasteful Things in Your Business to Start Making Net Profits!

"Waste not, want not."
"Don't waste your breath."
"What a waste of time/space/energy."

The list goes on and I'm sure you've either heard or said any number of these idioms over the years.

Being the system type of personality that I am, wasting time is a big pet peeve of mine.

Growing up on the farm my Dad decided he wanted to control the thistles that were starting to take over the back pasture. I guess pesticides weren't a thing back then, but child labour was!

One summer he put me to work pulling out every single thistle stock... by hand. Armed with adult-sized leather gloves, I sat on the field grabbing the large prickly stalks at the base and tugged with all my might to free those suckers from their clutches. I had to ensure every bit of root was captured; otherwise, the weed would grow right back again.

I laboured all summer on that project (or so my childhood memory has deemed this to be true). It was a big patch of nettles with thick stocks firmly implanted into the hard ground, so they weren't all that easy to pull out for this 10 year old.

Of course the next summer they all came back to continue their dominance of the field.

What a colossal waste of time that was.

Have you ever felt like you've wasted too much of something in your business? When marketing the services that we provide, you'll often hear me encourage business owners to stop wasting three things:

1. Wasting Time

2. Wasting Money

3. Wasting Energy

Let's explore each of these areas and see if anything resonates with you.

Wasting time

One of the biggest problems I see entrepreneurs have is wasting their time trying to learn and do something that's outside their area of expertise.

Somewhere along the way, especially us women, we got it into our heads that we should know how to do everything that involves building a business.

How is that even possible?

Even if one had a Masters degree in Business, would they know HOW to do everything? Certainly they would know WHAT needs to be done, but I argue not how.

That's why businesses can't be built with just one person. They need a team.

Businesses need to delegate to people who have expertise in areas the founder doesn't.. And no, the DIY tools that are available don't cut the mustard. Just because I know how to use a calculator, doesn't make me a mathematician.

Ultimately, you don't know what you don't know and that's OK. There's nothing wrong with you. You simply need to learn to delegate!

I asked fellow business owners in a Facebook group I belong to what they found wasteful in their business and throughout this piece you will hear their responses.

This one from Christine Awram, founder of Woman of Worth, shares her valuable lesson on trying to do everything herself:

"Wearing too many hats and not staying focused on what I'm most brilliant at, letting others shine their specific brilliance on areas I'm not as strong in. Doing everything and/or micromanaging comes with a price tag, primarily burnout and unintentionally pissing people off LOL. This was a hard lesson for me many years ago, when I thought I was Superwoman and could do everything."

Another waste of time that I certainly fell into the trap of is attending countless webinars and seminars. And I'm not the only one! NLP Trainer and Master Coach Teri Holland wrote:

"I wasted a lot of time and money on weekend seminars that offered no value, but I felt a sense of "FOMO" if I didn't attend. Each time I left feeling deflated the seminar didn't provide what was promised and was just a sales pitch for a bigger program.

And there are some good ones out there too! I'm just more discerning about where I spend my time and money now and I stopped chasing the next shiny offer."

Jenn Biddlecombe with Inner City Flooring in Coquitlam mentioned a waste of time you may have also experienced:

"I wasted energy on trying to get family to support my business at the beginning. You and you alone are the only one who cares about your success."

Wasting Money

I mean, who hasn't wasted money while pursuing their dream business? I sure have!

Similar to Teri, I spent a lot of money on courses and programs that didn't deliver anywhere near what was promised. Heck, I could have taught those courses myself and added even more value while at it!

Aside from spending money on courses and programs, there are other areas that could be sucking your money out of your net profits.

One of them I have experienced is hiring the wrong people for our team. Whether hiring an employee, contractor or sub-contractor, this can be a very costly mistake if the proper due diligence isn't done to ensure the right person is chosen.

And I'm not the only one! Martin Jongejan, owner of ZOOM Home Cleaning Experts expressed his frustrations in this area:

"Spending too much time and effort on members of my team that I wanted to succeed in their role, more than they wanted to succeed in their role. Was like trying to push a rope. I can't underestimate the importance of having people on your team who get it, who want it, and who are capable of doing it."

And Renata Kobek with Kobek Immigrations has a similar experience:

"Paying for professional services that were subpar and spending too much time trying to make sure everything is perfect."

Business Management Consultant at Black Sheep Business Consulting, Kevin Foreman shared a valuable lesson he learned about wasting money:

"I have wasted the most in business by means of capital. It underlines the need to have ample financial resources, as not every investment in your business will pay off. Some people like to say 'you don't need money to start or grow a business', but they couldn't be more wrong. You need lots of money, because even the strongest businesses waste lots of capital. The loss in opportunity of not wasting capital is lesser than the chance to gain market share, which comes by wasting some capital."

Ultimately, to grow a business, it's important to ensure whatever you are investing money in has an ROI (Return on Investment). If that investment, such as a fancy new phone, a program teaching you skills outside of your area of expertise, or state-of-the-art camera, can't make you money, then reconsider and use those funds for something that will.

Wasting Effort

Sometimes we don't realize just how valuable effort is. It's not tangible or measurable, but when push comes to shove, it's extremely valuable.

Effort is a resource we need to hold onto dearly and ensure it's being used with the right intentions.

Achieving our goals is one such intention. Do you have your business goals mapped out? What do you want to achieve in the next 6 months? By next year? 5 years from now?

If you haven't mapped out your goals then you could be wasting a lot of effort chasing unachievable pipe dreams.

Or maybe you do have goals in mind, but have you mapped out how to achieve them? What needs to take place to realize those goals?

This is where knowing your numbers is also imperative. If you don't know your numbers, then you are wasting a lot of effort playing in your business.

This example from Marcel Barker with Tammi Anne Barker wasted a lot of effort trying to sell before truly understanding what they were selling:

"Our biggest waste of time, energy, and money comes from not fully understanding our product life cycle and when we should be doing what. We'd generate a bunch of hype on social media long before we had figured out what we were selling and how it would be produced. When I finally sat down to write a proper business plan I researched and wrote up a full, highly detailed end-to-end walkthrough, taking a collection through high concept -> design -> development -> launch -> selling -> production. It revealed a lot of what we had been doing wrong."

Chasing those shiny objects that inundate us Every. Single. Day. can be so tempting when we don't know our numbers and have a business and marketing plan in place to follow.

And thus we go full circle.

Wasting valuable time, money and effort trying to build a successful and sustainable business.

Biggest Mistake When Starting An Online Business!

Are You Ready To Face The Hard Truth?

Affiliate marketing is a great way to start an online business. Many successful online business owners have used affiliate marketing to launch their online businesses. After achieving a certain level of success, they specialize in their interests and start other businesses.

I know of affiliate marketers who have achieved high incomes; however, even though it may be a great way to get started this should not be assumed it is easy.

Affiliate marketing is not easy, although you can find mentors who will help and guide you so you can prevent making the mistakes, which in itself will accelerate your learning curve. However, there is still going to be a learning curve and a lot of work.

One of the biggest misconceptions I believe out there in starting a business online is, 'people set up and affiliate program or website and then sit back and expect the money to roll in.'

Although to most this seems ludicrous. Yes, you will be correct in thinking that this type of thinking is ludicrous, people are still doing it, and subconsciously this is precisely how they think.

They set up their affiliate program, website or blog, then start doing excellent work. As the results aren't quick enough, they become distracted by the next big thing or stop believing that this business they have just started will work.

There are good reasons for people to have this behaviour and belief system. The internet business opportunities have taught people for years about money-making opportunities and get rich quick schemes that have littered the internet since time began, (online that is).

The making money online it's easy, sit back and watch the money roll in, earn millions while sleeping or working ten minutes - all these tag lines.

These taglines are correct, but only after a lot of work has done to set this business up to be at a stage where you will be making money in your sleep, etc.

The reality is, if you want to start a business online, start making money online - you are going to have to put in a lot of work. Yes, you read correctly. You are going to have to put in a lot of work. Let's face it. You are starting a business. Especially in beginning a business you are going to have to do a lot of work to get it up and running.

There is going to have to be an investment. This investment would either be time, money or a combination of both. Just remember you are starting a business. Starting by not investing a lot of money - you would need to spend a lot of time. The reverse is true. The best option in my experience and from the mentors I follow is a little of both - time and money.

Good mentors will help and guidance along the process, saving a lot of hassle, time and financial waste. However, you will need to be able to find these mentors, that could be difficult enough with every other website promising the world on a push button get rich quick scheme.

I am thankful for being introduced to my mentor and have not looked back. When I met him, he told me I was going to have to do a lot of work. He didn't shy away from this fact. I will have to put in the time. He also told me very clearly that I will have to invest some money.

After all, I am starting a business, and these are two aspects many don't mention or want to hear. The result is they get caught out and lose interest or end up losing money, wasting a whole lot of time only to have nothing to show for it. Therefore in the process, their confidence in any future online business in tatters.

So if you can be honest with your self, you admit that you are going to have to put in some real work and invest some money. If you understand this simple point, you already have an advantage over most people who start online.

Surprisingly today, people are still looking for that golden egg or easy money.

No, it is not all doom and gloom. Although I don't think that what I have just shared is doom and gloom, instead it should be a breath of fresh air and should fill you with excitement as I have just told you that if you are willing to put in the work and invest some money and stick with it, you will be successful.

Now mentors like mine who have genuinely been successful in the area that they teach and have a passion for teaching others are invaluable to people who want to start a business online. You will be able to learn how to do things the right way rather than have to figure it out yourself. They will have developed processes and tools that they pass on to speed up the process and help build, once again, you don't have to improve. However, more importantly, they will be able to guide and mentor you and invite you into the community they have created where people are helping each other to achieve their online business goals.

Let's admit it the first time you mentioned that you were starting an online business to your closest and dearest, be honest they were probably not that supportive and filled with excitement. Now that alone is one step closer to defeat for your online business dreams.
